Here it is, the answer to the question nobody asked: Why hasn't somebody made a fanmix for the Tom Cruise/Simon Pegg pairing? Well, wonder no more!
It is called Hockey Night in Canada and Everything After. Because it is based on the fic series I'm currently writing with the same title. Because Simon and Tom went on a hockey date in Vancouver that one time. And because I stole the last part of the title from a Counting Crows album.
I've included some songs from bands that Simon likes. As for Tom, I included a couple of songs that I feel represent him mainly because of Rock of Ages, not because of his actual musical taste. It's kind of impossible to find info about what music that guy listens to. Google has been completely unhelpful, so I stuck with a couple of 90's power ballads a la RoA to represent Tom. For Simon, we have Death Cab, Elbow, and Lemon Jelly. Everything else is pure me.
I may have gone overboard on posting song lyrics here. Some songs had so many good lyrics that I couldn't choose. Also, I ramble a bit in some spots while explaining song significance. Each song title is linked to an uploaded copy that you can preview and/or download individually, so you can pick and choose which songs you want. The link to the zip file containing all songs, plus cover art, is at the bottom. There's also a link to the folder containing the individual songs and the cover art down there. If anything is linked incorrectly, please let me know!

01. Want by The Temper Trap
The first time I heard this song I knew I wanted to put it on a fanmix at some point. It's so pretty. It's clearly about yearning. There are several songs on this fanmix about that.
Tom to Simon:
"I want to be the one to set your eyes alight
I want to be the one you treasure deep inside
I want to be the one to make you laugh each time
I want to be the only one you come home to at night
Stay in my heart
You can't always get what you want this time
That's how it is, oceans apart
Two wanderers have set their course to collide"
02. Polite Dance Song by The Bird and the Bee
I think this is fairly self-explanatory.
Tom to Simon:
"Since I'm asking so nice
Would you just entertain?
There's nothing left to hide you away
Just show a little bit of brain
Yes, that is what I mean
That's the nail that I hit
I try to be as coy as I can
But I want to see your naughty bit"
03. Nothing is Anything (Without You) by Wintersleep
Again, I feel yearning in this song. Feels like it's about an existing relationship in which one party is sure, and the other isn't. Or something like that.
Tom to Simon:
"If it was easier to leave it alone
Why did you come here?
I took my bike, I broke the lock on your door
I want to stay
If it's alright, it's alright
You forgot your love today
Remember, I would do anything
No one can ever take your place
And I can't live my life without you, babe"
Simon to Tom:
"Maybe it's easier to just go home
Why do you want this?
Maybe tonight it isn't what you want
Or how does it end?
If it's alright, It's alright"
04. Constant Knot by City and Colour
I feel like this is about anxiety, and the guy is asking the other person to stay and help him through the night.
Tom to Simon:
"How much would you bet
That if I tried hard enough
I would spontaneously combust?
I wish I could disappear
And run away from all of my fears
I think I'm coming undone
So stay the night
I promise that I won't bite
'Cause without you there
I don't think I could close my eyes"
Simon to Tom:
"How do I end up this way?
A constant knot in my gut
Tied with uncertainty and with lust
A classic case, I suppose
A haunted man who can't outrun his ghosts
They're in my skin, in my bones"
05. Am I the Only One? by Barenaked Ladies
Those who know me know I just had to put some BNL on here. This song is heartbreaking. I believe Ed Robertson originally wrote it for his wife, but then his brother died and he changed the meaning to be for his brother instead. Don't quote me on that, though, 'cause I'm not sure.
Simon to Tom:
"Am I the only one who gets to make you laugh,
Laugh until you cry?
Am I the only one who asks you to go,
Go on without me?
Am I the only one who loves when you leave
Your hair down in front of your eyes?
And who
Who do you think I am?
And who
Who do you think I'll be
Without you?"
06. More Than Words Can Say by Alias
This is pure 90s power ballad gold. As is the next song, but focusing on this one for a moment: Alias is (or was; I don't know if they're still together) a Canadian rock band. This song played constantly on the radio when I was a kid. I kind of loved it. So, in honour of Rock of Ages, I thought I'd include it, because it sounds like something that should be on that soundtrack and it makes me nostalgic and it so clearly is about yearning. Because it's reminiscent of Rock of Ages, I feel it represents Tom, but these lyrics could be for either man.
"Here I am at six o'clock in the morning
Still thinking about you
It's still hard, at six o'clock in the morning
To sleep without you
And I know that it might
Seem too late for love
All I know
I need you now
More than words can say"
07. High Enough by Damn Yankees
Now, this one is actually in the Rock of Ages musical, but not in the film? I think? That's what Wikipedia told me. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, more 90s power ballad goodness, so yes, mainly representative of Tom. Interestingly, I really wanted to put this on a Benji Dunn/William Brandt (from Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol or MI4) fanmix because of the line "I just made one mistake / I didn't know what to say when you called me baby". There's a thing that happens in a Benji/Brandt fic I wrote that goes perfectly with that, but I don't think I'm ever gonna make that fanmix and I really want to use this song. This is another song that was played constantly on the radio when I was a kid and I still love it.
Simon to Tom:
"I don't wanna hear about it anymore
It's a shame I've got to live without you anymore
There's a fire in my heart
A pounding in my brain driving me crazy
We don't need to talk about it anymore
Yesterday's just a memory
Can you close the door?
I just made one mistake
I didn't know what to say when you called me baby"
Tom to Simon:
"I don't wanna live without you anymore
Can't you see I'm in a misery?
And you know for sure
I would live and die for you
And I'd know just what to do when you call me baby
Don't say goodbye
Say you're gonna stay forever
Oh, all the way
Can you take me high enough
To fly me over yesterday
Can you take me high enough
It's never over"
08. The World is Watching by Two Door Cinema Club
Again, about yearning. This is Tom, yearning to be with someone and knowing the world is watching his every move. Also, there is a little bit of Simon here, feeling the weight of the public eye increasing as he gains more and more fame, and also as he spends more time with Tom, a man who can't leave his house without causing a stir.
Tom to Simon:
"Everyone is here except for me
And I can feel the world is watching
Who is on their own, I wonder?
And who has cast this spell I'm under?
Look into your heart, are you happy?
You could be the one to set me free
And with your hand in mine we will walk
To a place that knows no one
I want you with me"
09. Chameleon/Comedian by Kathleen Edwards
This song is so perfect for this pairing, I can't even. I love Kathleen Edwards, her stuff is pure yearning. This song is very much about Simon, but it is Tom who is speaking to him here.
"I know your heart
It is a sacred thing
You're a comedian
You hide behind your funny face
Every time
Out of the shadows
Out of the cameras and the lights
You're a chameleon
And you hide behind your darker side
Every time
I don't need a punch line
Everybody's watching
The way that I see you could not change
I'll be your medium
For everything you wanted to say
'Cause out of the shadows
Out of the cameras and the lights
I'm a chameleon
I just hide behind the songs that I write
See me smile
It's not for a funny joke
It's for every time I don't need
I don't need a punch line
Every time I don't need a punch line"
10. Unobstructed Views by Death Cab for Cutie
This is the song Tom and Simon danced together to in the fic Dot, Dot, Dot, Dot, Dot. I knew that Simon, IRL, really loved the album this song is from, so I wanted to use something from it, and this seemed perfect.
Tom to Simon:
"There's no eye in the sky
Just our love
No unobstructed view
No perfect truths
Just our love
Just our love
And there's no verse
No monument of words
For our love
For they can't hold
All I know about my love, about my love"
11. Copied Keys by Kathleen Edwards
This song is about moving away from your home to be with your partner and just feeling out of place, because the house, all the streets and shops and people and hangouts, they're all your partner's, not yours. It's all secondhand for you and can never really be yours. This is Simon's song.
Simon to Tom:
"This is not my town and it will never be
This is our apartment, filled with your things
This is your life, I get copied keys
Try and force a little smile, hold it a little while for you
These are your old streets and you know them well
One way shortcuts all the way downtown
But your favorite find is just my secondhand secret
Try and hide a little pain for the things I can't explain to you"
12. Fireworks by The Tragically Hip
Pure Canadian rock. I've included this here mainly because it mentions hockey. Tom likes hockey. Simon isn't a sports guy at all, but he went to a hockey game with Tom while they were shooting MI4, which is what started this 'verse in the first place; Holy Shit, it's Tom Cruise is about (what I'd like to have happened on) that night. This is Tom's song.
Tom to Simon:
"If there's a goal that everyone remembers
It was back in ol' '72
We all squeezed the stick and we all pulled the trigger
And all I remember was sitting beside you
You said you didn't give a fuck about hockey
I never saw someone say that before
You held my hand and we walked home the long way
You were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr
Isn't it amazing anything's accomplished
When the little sensation gets in your way?
Not one ambition whisperin' over your shoulder
Isn't it amazing you can do anything?"
13. '75 - Stay With You by Lemon Jelly
This is Simon's song. My Simon has a lot of angst about whether he can actually be in a relationship with Tom, so this is him deciding that, yes, he can. The song Staunton Lick by Lemon Jelly is the final song heard in the final episode of the final series of Spaced. I loved it the moment I heard it and I finally downloaded Lemon Jelly's stuff. It's all catchy as hell and great background music for writing. I chose this song because of its title, and also the disco-y sound is a nice lead-in to the next track, which you'll see (and laugh at) in a second. There aren't many lyrics in this one. It's just fun.
14. I'm Coming Out by Diana Ross
Heh. The third fic in the HNiCaEA series, called Phantom Limb, is very much about the decision of whether or not to come out to the world. So ... yeah. That's all, really. You all know the lyrics, I won't bother posting them.
15. Buffalo Ghosts by Elbow
I'll be honest: I have no clue what this song is about, but it's so damn pretty, it makes me wanna write schmoopy love scenes. Elbow is a British band that Simon likes. He guest-hosted a radio show a while back in which he shared with us some of the songs that he loves and that have meaning to him. Elbow's amazing song called Forget Myself was featured, but I didn't notice; I wasn't paying attention to the music Simon was spinning, I was listening to his lovely voice. Music was the last thing on my mind. This was quite some time ago. I didn't actually get into Elbow until just a couple of months ago when their cover of Destiny's Child's Independent Woman was played on the Nerdist Podcast. I thought it was fun and wanted to download it. I still haven't gotten hold of it, but I did get their 2011 album Build a Rocket Boys! Based on the Destiny's Child cover, I was expecting something completely different than what I got, but I was pleasantly surprised and instantly hooked. Their stuff is beautiful, big, sweeping, at times fun, other times haunting, always lovely. I can't say enough about this band. They've been around for, like, the entirety of the last decade and I had no idea, which makes me sad.
Anyway, the line in the song "The journey makes me taller" is not a comment about either man's height. That's not why I chose this song. I chose it because it's beautiful. Although, I will admit, the height line is kinda funny in this context, so feel free to giggle. Incidentally, for my fic I see Tom and Simon as being the same height (around 5'9") because they kind of are in MI4. But I'm pretty sure Tom's a couple inches shorter IRL.
"Buffalo ghosts, hurtle slow on blue
The journey makes me taller
The journey brings me you"
